Robert Glasper
Last summer Frolab.com had the most amazing opportunity to document the making of the Robert Glasper Experiment’s new album “Black Radio.” The majority of the LP was recorded over 4 magical days in LA and it was a true honor to witness some of our generation’s greatest musicians create and collaborate in a series of one takes.
Robert Glasper, Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave, Derrick Hodge and Casey Benjamin – all masters at their respective instruments – were captivating subjects as we floated from set up to set up capturing video of their creative process. Then add in the special guest artists that blessed the mic – KING, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Stokley, Ledisi, Shafiq, Yasiin Bey (who was then known as Mos Def), Bilal… those four days are easily some of our best of 2011 and now that the album is set for release, it is EASILY up for the best album of 2012.
A portion of the footage captured is shared here in this Behind the Scenes EPK where you see a bit of the studio process and hear Rob talk about the relationships with the guests and the band, highlighting the tracks “Afro Blue” featuring Erykah Badu, “Always Shine” feat. Lupe Fiasco & Bilal, a warm and sultry cover of Sade’s “Cherish the Day” by R&B heiress Lalah Hathaway, “Ah Yeah” feat Musiq Soulchild and Chrisette Michele and the title track “Black Radio” featuring Yasiin Bey.

Official Video: Picture Perfect
Taking a less is more approach to his new video, Eric Roberson delivers a simple yet effective clip for "Picture Perfect." Shot in black and white, the visuals for the first single from Mister Nice Guy are appealing if you like handsome men in suits, which I surely do. The men in question are Roberson, of course, with producers Aaron Hardin and Slimkat78 suited up and appearing on instruments and our main man Phonte sliding on the scene looking crispy and clean later to rap. It's not all about the fellas, however, with Bounce-Worthy beauty Sepsenahki cast as the picture perfect object of Erro's affections. My inner director actually had a different concept in mind that involved painting perfect pictures as opposed to taking them, but this works, too, with the filmstrip theme throughout.

Yahzarah - Love Come Save the Day - OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO
Prior to giving birth to her son Miles last month, YahZarah filmed the video for the song "Love Come Save the Day" from last year's stellar The Ballad of Purple Saint James. The singer is absolutely radiant in these heart-warming visuals of her frolicking on a beach and walking through the woods with Miles still in utero.
The love YahZarah has for her unborn child is a beautiful sight to see, and this song is the perfect soundtrack. If you're the sentimental type, then you may want to have a few tissues nearby to catch your tears of joy as you watch this.

Slakah The Beatchild - The Cure
Slakah the Beatchild is solidifying his spot as one of my favorite Canadian exports. The singer/songwriter/producer already has music on lock with a slew of dope releases (Soul Movement Vol. 1, Something Forever), and he's since added a few more talents to his resume, including video director for his newly formed Beatchild Films. We just saw him lens Ayah's intriguing mini-movie for "When It Comes To You" and now we get to see him in motion in the music video for "The Cure," a sexy little ditty from Something Forever.
Slakah doesn't take the typical route with this video either, however. In it, he plays a hospital patient who is allowed to walk right out of the medical center -- hospital gown and all. He has his lady's photo in his hand and he flashes back to scenes of them together as he wanders around before ending up back at their house. You may think that Beatchild has gone crazy or is at least crazy in love, but it's the video's ending that will shock you and bring the storyline full circle.

Jesse Boykins III | Prototype 3010, a short film
Pulling off a worthy cover of a classic song is not an easy feat. While covers usually serve to pay tribute to the original version or artist, the bigger purpose should be to add another dimension and improve upon the original, if at all possible. Jesse Boykins III's cover of Andre 3000's "Prototype" last fall nothing more than phenomenal.
Thankfully, he did Dre justice. Jesse's cover is amazing , and now he's released long-awaited visuals for the song. The short film features his massive hair, some beautiful African and jazz dance moments, and a surprise yet sweet and sappy ending. Fitting, soothing visuals for a smooth, bump & grind playlist-worthy jam.

Def Sound - Again
def sound - (A)Gain
The LA-based rapper with the multilevel flattop and the super casual flow dropped visuals for "(A)Gain" this week, and it is, naturally, a winner. Borrowing both its title and sample from The Bird and the Bee's "Again and Again," we see Def going through his daily routine (grooming, drinking tea, doing calisthenics, reading, etc), repeating the same exact actions at least a dozen times. Dope wardrobe changes and editing here, and the clip, directed by Adam Tillman-Young, falls right in line with every other unexpected offering from the man.
Sidenote: the whole song -- produced by frequent collaborator RC -- is fire, but the way the beat changes on that second verse? Golden.

Raashan Ahmad - Beautiful Ugly
I definitely get the late pass on this cat, Raashan Ahmad definitely has a great sound coming from the Bay area. This video is from his upcoming album "For What You've Lost" (available on Itunes now). He had this to say about the loveliness that is Beautiful Ugly:
Heres the video for Beautiful Ugly off my new album For What Youve Lost Filmed in Paris France- The track is produced by Headnodic and featuring Adam Theis on Trombone.
This song is about how beautiful everything is (the sky, mountains, nature, innocence, children) and at the exact same time how ugly the world can be (genocide, junkies, sex slaves, prison industrial complex)

The frenetic drum & bass heavy remix features Erykah Badu and the original Paul McCartney sample ‘Arrow Through Me’.
The sensual avant-garde style video is directed by Jesse Boykins III for LightUp Film who makes the art the beat making into hypnotic foreplay between Melo and Sade, now how sexy is that?! This is a must see!

The Foreign Exchange - Maybe She'll Dream Of Me (Official Music Video directed by Matt Koza)
The Foreign Exchange released the video for the group’s first single off their third studio album, Authenticity.
“Maybe She’ll Dream Of Me” isn’t a complicated tune at all, the premise of longing for the one you love to reciprocate the affections equally as hard isn’t far-fetched.
The majority of us don’t live whirlwind love affairs, jetsetting the world and eating candlelight dinners with aspiring models. We encounter that special someone in the most mundane of places, usually in spots where they become the brightest, undeniable ray of light.
From then on, we set our sights on winning their heart, hoping to have our advances welcomed. See, it’s straightforward simplicity and the basics are why this duo keeps winning when it comes to crafting music to match the occasion.

Everytime the Foreign Exchange comes to New York, you can always bet I'll be there.
Only a couple of weeks after the release of their latest album "Authenticity", The Foreign Exchange performed at BB Kings in Times Square as a part of CMJ Weekend. There were a lot of guest appearances including Rapper Big Pooh, Chaundon, Joe Scudda, and Chante Canne. Another guest appearance featured Jesse Boykins III performing "Don't Make Me Fool" along with FE. As I always tell everyone if you've never been to a FE show, you're definitley in for an expirience!!!

YahZarah - Cry Over You feat. Phonte | Official Music Video
YahZarah has found the best way to get over someone in her brand new video for "Cry Over You." She's not content to stay at home eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's and watching Lifetime movies. No ma'am. She's gonna put on her flyest outfit and go out with her equally as fly friends to paint the town red--or at least drive around town in a red convertible--and indulge in some retail therapy and good times.
Filmed on location in her hometown of Washington, DC, "Cry Over You" is a fun and sassy declaration of independence from The Ballad of Purple Saint James and the Matt Koza-directed video is a fantastic interpretation. Joining Yahz is Phonte aka the "King of the Grill" who spits a few bars while holding it down on the grill at a jam-packed cookout.

D-Brock - Rain
Darien Brockington Makes It "RAIN"
Darien Brockington is back at it again. This is D-Brock's first solo video "Rain" off of the "Cold Case Files". The video, expertly directed by Muta'Ali, captures all that sexy and raises the bar by adding a love interest into the mix and catching them in a few compromising positions. Taken from his last release, The Cold Case Files, "Rain" is as sensuous as its accompanying visuals and a very necessary addition to your slow jams playlist.

OFFICIAL VIDEO: ERIC ROBERSON - "STILL"
Remember how you felt when you saw Aaron Hall's "I Miss You" video back in the day? We all know it was that heartfelt tear dropper. Eric Roberson brings that same feeling in his brand-spanking new video for the song "Still" from his last release, Music Fan First.
Erro starts off at a nightclub looking lost and out of sorts while everyone around him parties it up. He leaves and we see him flashing back to happier times with the object of these lyrics. Just when you think that the video is going in one direction, he flips the script with a heart-wrenching twist that culminates in an emotional dénouement.I'm telling you right now, have a box of tissues nearby.
Beautifully done by Chris & Blaq of Impakt Studios out of Chicago (who also shot the "Dealing" video). Enjoy and reach out and touch someone you love afterward.

YahZarah - Why Dontcha Call Me No More OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO
If you haven't copped YahZarah's brand new album, The Ballad of Purple Saint James, then you're missing out on some GREAT music. Yahz just drops the video for "Why Dontcha Call Me No More". Starting off the clip with Yahz and the Hollagrams (a nod to the cartoon Jem and the Holograms--80's babies only), between the outfits, the hair, the choreography, this video is a whirlwind of truly outrageous '80s nostalgia. Whoever styled this joint did a superb job to make everyone look straight outta 1985. Directed by Matt Koza, the video features cameos from her Foreign Exchange family members Phonte and Nicolay (whose wifey Aimee Flint can be seen getting it in on drums) rocking the most hilarious wigs and guyliner and a guest cameo from Jesse Boykins III. I'm still trying to work it to where I can post Vimeo videos on the site, but in the mean time click below to view the video
